Making Coherence

Making a strategy that works is only possible through coherence.

It's an essential quality for these times.

  • Effectiveness and performance is only possible when everything is properly connected as a whole. And when realised it's a unified operation in pursuit of a vision.

  • Coherence means logical and consistent activity in a world that isn’t logical and consistent. And that’s vital for every business to create a solid basis upon which to achieve.

A Question Of Coherence

  • Although the world may change every second - significant portions of the business cannot.

  • The question is therefore where and how to be logical and consistent.

  • This is what the assessments define over the course of three levels.

The Levels Of Assessment

  • Our assessments begin at Level One and increase in depth to Level Three.

Level One

At this high level, there are 10 critical questions that every business should be able to answer if aiming for strategic and operational coherence.

  • Without good scores here then there are real implications. Remedies will need to be sought.

  • The test is the degree of coherence between strategy (vision and mission) and operation (capability and plan).

  • At this level we pose important questions across a number of dimensions.

  • Responses give us insight into the degree of coherence.

  • They may sound simple enough but they deserve thoughtful and honest responses.

  • In practice and from our experience it’s unlikely that 100% scores will be achievable for any business.

Level One Feeds Level Two

As the sense of coherence emerges it invites a deeper level of question.

  • This considerably improves our appreciation of each area.

  • The value of this is in identifying contractions, gaps and misalignment.

  • The questions also further validate the strengths of the business.

  1. Level 1 questions reveal which important areas we need to focus on the most.

  2. Level 2 questions help us identify the granular level - the specific parts that will be most effective in moving to ‘coherence’.

Level Two Drives Level 3

Level 3 is active collaboration that brings everything together.

We take the Level 1 and 2 insights - the results and ‘configure’ a program to design the future path.

This allows the leaders to work together (through Structured Visual Thinking™) to design, develop and deliver the strategy (and plan) to achieve the results.

We use a range of tools and techniques over the course of an assignment.

These instruments and mechanisms make sure we develop the right vision, plan and principles for leadership that will endure over the longer term.
